Possessing God's Promises

The story of Abraham is an amazing one. God promised Abraham that he would have a son and that his descendants would be innumerable. The problem was that Abraham and Sara had been unable to have children. Time passed, 10 years, then another 10 years, and still no son. How could God fulfill His promise to Abraham now that both he and Sara were past the age of child bearing? Talk about the potential for discouragement. Yet despite how things looked in the natural, Abraham continued to believe the Word of God over his circumstances. In Romans we gain interesting insight into Abraham's faith during this time in his life ...

18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, so shall your descendants be. 19 Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb; 20 yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform (Romans 4:18-21).

Abraham would not allow his past experience to overshadow the promise that God had made to him. Look at Romans 4:17 ….

17 (as it is written, A father of many nations have I made you) in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist (Romans 4:17).

Abraham believed that God could bring forth life even out of the deadness of Sarah's womb. Wow! That indeed is faith.

What does this speak to us today? God's Word is true, regardless of our circumstances. Do not let your past experiences and your present circumstances determine your future.

Considering the faith of Abraham, here is a biblical declaration you can make over your life …

"As Abraham did, I speak God's promises over my life so that my faith is strengthened to possess all of God's promises" (from Romans 4:17-23).

During this 40 day season of Empowered Words, let me encourage you to make a conscious effort to bring your thoughts, your words, and your self-talk (what you say to yourself), into alignment with the Word of God. We will not suddenly walk in the fullness of the promises of God simply by making a declaration, but speaking truth over our lives is a big part of building faith in our hearts and possessing all that God has for us.

Expect today to be the best day of your life spiritually, emotionally, relationally, and financially.

Be blessed,

Pastor Gary
