Turn Aside

The Bible makes an incredible statement about the man Moses in Exodus 33 …

"Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend … " (Ex 33.11, NASB).

God spoke to Moses face to face. I believe God wants us to draw close to Him today as well, so He can speak to us "face to face." In Exodus 3 we have an interesting window into the life of Moses ...

Exodus 3:2–4 (NASB95)
2 The angel of the LORD appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.
3 So Moses said, “I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight, why the bush is not burned up.”
4 When the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.

God was apparently not going to speak to Moses unless He made the effort to "turn aside now" and see what was happening with the bush. God placed the bush so Moses could see it, but He was also looking for Moses to pursue a further understanding of this incredible sight that he had seen (a bush that burns without being consumed). It was not until Moses "turned aside" that God spoke to Him and gave Him insight and revelation of what God wanted to do in and through Moses.

"When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him …"

God wants to speak to us today, like He did with Moses, "face to face." However, I think many times we miss hearing the Lord, because we do not take time to "turn aside now" and seek the Lord. There is great value in actively pursuing God, not from a place of busyness, but from a place of waiting on the Lord and listening for His voice. It says in the book of Deuteronomy ...

“But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul" (Deut 4:29).

You will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart. There is a place for you and I to take the initiative and pursue God. We find this same idea reinforced in Jeremiah where God is speaking to the nation of Israel, and He says …

Jeremiah 29:12–13 (NASB95)
12 ‘Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.
13 ‘You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.

There is much that God has available for us today, not just sometime in the future when we get to heaven. God is very present with us today and is looking for us to "turn aside now" to pursue Him, talk to Him, and listen for His voice.
