The Affairs of Government

This past Sunday we completed our series on Worldviews. We specifically looked at how our view of the world affects our understanding of government and politics. We are in the  middle of a very intense and divisive national election. The platforms developed by the two major political parties are distinctively different and clearly speak to very different worldviews in conflict.

The divide between light and darkness in our culture is greater than ever. It reminds me of Isaiah 5:20 ...

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

Many  believe we are beyond the place where a political solution can fix our nation. It would not be an understatement to say that we are in need of a national spiritual revival.

We have taken issues like ....
the definition of marriage between one man and one woman,
        homosexual versus heterosexual behavior,
abortion, the killing of a baby in a mother's womb,

... and made them into political issues that the church is not allowed to talk about. These and many other issues like them are not political issues, they are moral and biblical issues that the church has every right to speak out on. The Bible has much to say about each of the above issues.

The media has used the Johnson Amendment and the Establishment Clause (separation of church and state) to all but remove religion from the public arena. It is time for the church to stand up and take a stand on these and other moral/biblical issues. The truths in the Bible apply not only to our personal lives but to our national life as well. The founding father's of our nation never intended for religion to be removed from government. Thomas Jefferson makes it very clear, that the wall of separation between church and state is to protect the church from government regulation, not to keep religious and moral principles from influencing and guiding government policy.

There are many important issues facing our nation today ... economy, energy, health care, taxes, national security, immigration, and more. But there are none more  important than the value of human life from conception to natural death, family and marriage, and our personal liberties and freedoms, and in particular our religious freedoms. Allow these issues above all to govern how you vote this November.

The following words are the last words in the Declaration of Independence ...

... And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

The Declaration not only declared our independence from Great Britain, but just as clearly declared our dependence on God.

As a nation, as a people, we must put our trust and confidence in God. As Christian's this is a time to earnestly pray and seek God on behalf of this great country of ours. Pray for spiritual revival, pray that godly and moral men and women would be elected to public office. Pray for the issues of Life, Family, and Freedom.
