What we see happening in our society today is a collision of differing worldviews. This past Sunday we looked a several popular worldviews: Secular Humanist, Marxist/Leninist, and Cosmic Humanist (New Age Movement). All of these worldviews lead people to draw conclusions about the world in which they live and often define how they respond to the issues of life that we all encounter.
Many of these worldviews, and others, believe that the universe came about by accident and the processes of nature are random. When they look at this incredible creation in which we live, they do not see design and therefore they do not believe in a designer or a creator.
Proponents of the above worldviews often look down on people of faith who interpret the world in which they live through the eyes of the Bible. They say, "It is not 'reasonable' or 'rational' to believe in a God who created the universe."
Consider the following verse from Paul's letter to the church in Corinth:
"But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised" (1 Cor 2.14).
A natural man in the above verse, is a man who does not believe in God and has not accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
A natural man is as much a man of faith as a spiritual man, but his faith is in something other than God's Word. A spiritual man is as much a man of reason as the natural man, but his reason is within the context of his faith. To believe in an atheistic worldview, that life was created through a series of cosmic accidents that took place over a long period of time, takes as much faith as believing in the Genesis account of creation. Evolution has never been proven, and since no one was there to observe creation, it can hardly be considered science, and certainly not good science.
The Bible, in many places, talks about creation and how the world came into being. Consider John 1.1-4 ...
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men."
There are four truths we can derive from these verses which, in many ways, are the basis for Christian philosophy ...
1. God before man
(there is a Creator, man is not a cosmic accident)
2. Plan and design before creation
(in creation we see design, order, and purpose- points to a designer)
3. Life from life
(life does not come from non-living matter- God is the source of life)
4. Enlightenment from Light
(God is the true source of knowledge and wisdom)
Lord, thank you for this incredible creation in which we live. We acknowledge you as our Creator and the source of all life.
