The Person of the Holy Spirit

This past Sunday we talked about Pentecost, the Holy Spirit, the baptism of the Holy Spirit, and speaking in tongues. If you were not in church this past Sunday, I would encourage you go to the church website and listen to the sermon. This topic is very important for us to understand as Christians.
The Holy Spirit is the third part of the Godhead, which some refer to as the Trinity. There is ONE God that exists eternally in THREE Persons. You can see this concept in both the old and the new testaments. In the book of Genesis, at the time of creation, God refers to Himself in the plural …

Gen 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness ...

In the New Testament, as Jesus gets ready to ascend into heaven, He commissions His disciples in Matthew and says to them …

Mat 28:19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

Here He specifically refers to each of the three parts of the Godhead- the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is important to remember that the essential nature of God is spirit …

Jn 4:24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."

However, the Holy Spirit is not just an attribute of God, He is God. He is a person, in the same way that the Father and the Son, are persons. He is a person, as opposed to Luke Skywalker when he said “may the force be with you,” where the force was a power and not a person. The Holy Spirit is a person, one part of the Godhead. As a person, we can interact with Him and have a relationship with Him.

The Holy Spirit is represented by a number of different symbols in the Bible- wind, fire, wine, dove, glory-cloud, oil, etc. This quote by Jack Hayford is very appropriate as we talk about the Holy Spirit …

"When we talk about the Holy Spirit as rain, for example, the purpose is not to think, “Oh, the Holy Spirit is like rain.” The purpose is to get wet" (Jack Hayford).

We do not want to simply understand the Holy Spirit as a concept, we want to immerse ourselves in the person of the Holy Spirit ...

John 16:13-14
13“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
14“He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you.

The Holy Spirit will always honor the Words and life of Jesus Christ. He will guide us into all truth and disclose to us things that are yet to come. The Holy Spirit should play a very important role in the life of every believer. Take time to get to know Him, meditate on Bible verses that talk about the Holy Spirit. As you do, you will not just encounter the Holy Spirit as a power, but you will find yourself immersed in who He is as a person.

As a person, He is powerful!

Get wet!
