Clearly the Bible teaches that faith is required to receive answers to prayer. So have you ever tried to stir up your faith? That’s what I was doing when I had a small revelation. I was trying to increase something in me, thinking that if I had enough faith things would happen. I realized I wasn’t having faith in God. I was having faith in my faith.
This led me to ask, “What does faith look like that is focused on God?” There are lots of verses on faith, but the passages most helpful to me were Hebrews 10:35-39 and Luke 18:1-8. You can read them for yourself, but I’ll summarize my conclusions.
I don’t think true faith is about believing enough so much as believing consistently, long enough, with perseverance and endurance. I think we grow in faith through practice, and that it is inseparable from a life of intimacy with Him through prayer. (Heb 11:6) I think it’s having no confidence in ourselves, but being so confident in Him that when things look bad, like Peter, our attitude is “where else can we go? You have the words of life.”
Our faith is in He Who has proven Himself faithful. We’re either leaning on Him or working on plan B. My faith may be smaller than a mustard seed, but I think it will be enough if I can just direct all of it toward Him.
