The Greek word translated church in the book of Acts is Ekklesia. The word was used by the Greeks to describe a body of citizens gathered together to discuss the affairs of state.
As Stuart Greaves pointed out Sunday, this is an interesting word for God to choose to describe the church. Throughout the Bible, the church is described as the body of believers gathered together to bring honor and glory to Jesus Christ. It is by no means a political entity. However, I believe the role of the church gives far beyond what we realize. As Stuart mentioned Sunday, the church is to be God’s governing body in a city built upon the revelation of Jesus Christ. The church is to be God’s place of government in the earth today.
However, that government will not be established by political agendas but by the prayer and intercession of God’s people. God does want to establish His kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.
The church of Jesus Christ should be a source of light and truth in any community. It should be a testimony of God’s love and the incredible destiny He has for every person and every nation.
What has the church meant to you? How important is prayer and intercession to the church fulfilling its mission?
