The Bible says that Jesus “would often slip away to the wilderness.” Why did He slip away without the disciples?
Jesus was busy going from village to village ministering to the needs of the people. He set many free from demonic activity and healed many others of physical illnesses. From time to time He would even raise someone from the dead.
How was He able to accomplish this? As it says in Luke-
“But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray” (Lk 5:16).
In order to perform all the amazing miracles that Jesus did among men, He had to first spend time with His heavenly Father. It was in this secret place, hidden away with God the Father, that Jesus received the wisdom and power to minister to the needs of men.
As believers and disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ we are instructed by the Lord to, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations… We will never be effective at this great mission until we learn lessons from the life of Jesus Himself. We must also be willing to, “often slip away to the wilderness and pray.”
God is calling us to sit before Him in the secret place of prayer, so we can stand in the presence of men and minister to them the life, light, and power of God. The Christian life is a life of service, but that service always comes out of learning to rest in His presence.
Jesus lived a very busy life of minsitry. Today, most people would say that they also live very busy lives.
In the middle of your busy schedule, are you making time to slip away and pray?
